About

Our Mission

History

Memphis Islamic Center (MIC) was established in 2008 as a 501 (c)3 corporation with the IRS and registered in the State of Tennessee with the aim of establishing a multipurpose Islamic Center to serve the needs of Muslims in the suburban Memphis area and beyond. Since that time MIC has developed into the face of Islam in the greater Memphis metropolitan area.

Currently we have a beautiful, sprawling 55 acre campus with our first building, an expansion of the first building, over 350+ parking spaces, a park area with a pond, several outdoor shelters, a bridge, large children’s playground, and many more attractive features that already make MIC a Family Life Center. Now that we’ve finalized our architectural design, our next steps include starting construction on the main building that will include the masjid/mosque, multi-purpose hall, offices, education facilities, exercise and recreation areas, and much more!

As of August 2013, we have enough funds to begin construction and continue our popular programs. We are both grateful and proud to say that all of our funds have been raised from our Memphis community.

Our number one priority is to create a vibrant American Muslim community, not just beautiful buildings. To that end, in 2010 we took the step of hiring nationally renowned scholar, Dr. Yasir Qadhi, who still serves as our Resident Scholar. Additionally, in 2013 we hired both a full time Education & Youth Director and a full time Imam as well.

By investing in human resources, providing quality, innovative and relevant programming for the entire family, while leading extensive interfaith work throughout the region, MIC continues to lead by example. Our center has been nationally, and internationally recognized for its interfaith and outreach efforts. In 2010 our relationship with our generous neighbors, Heartsong Church, was showcased around the world via national and international media channels. We’ve continued working with many other faith partners on dialogues, helping the needy, building bridges, and reaching out to help others understand authentic Islamic teachings.

Please join and support the MIC family. Our “open door” policy welcomes anyone of any faith to participate in our activities, visit our campus and build lifelong friendships. We hope to see you soon!

Mission

To Meet the Needs of a Growing Community

The Muslim population of the Memphis-Shelby County area has also grown tremendously over the past 30 years. More recently, there has been a major eastward population shift resulting in over half of Muslims now residing in the eastern suburbs of Memphis. As a result, the religious, social, and civic needs of Muslims have expanded significantly.

Despite the establishment of several mosques and other Islamic institutions the community as a whole, particularly women, youth, and the Muslims residing in the east, remains underserved. The existing mosques are limited primarily to hosting regular prayers and are unable to offer the space and facilities to meet the needs of the entire family.

The goal of the Memphis Islamic Center (MIC) is to fill this gap by establishing a Muslim family life center to meet the spiritual, social, and civic needs of all Muslims.

What is a Family Life Center?

From the time of the Messenger—peace be upon him—the mosque has been the central focus of the Muslim community. Indeed, the Prophet’s mosque in Medina was not just a prayer facility. It was a multipurpose family-centered institution that served as a school, a meeting place, a venue for sport events and other celebrations. Our objective is to build on this powerful heritage and help shape the identity of future generations of proud American Muslims.

Project Description

Our current campus is 55+ acres and already consists of a 6,000 sq. ft. building that houses a prayer hall, multi-function room, and meeting rooms. Also, we have over 350 parking spaces, a large children’s playground, a park area with gazebos, a walking bridge, and a pond, and many untapped resources.

The next step is to build our main center that will house the masjid/mosque, multi-purpose hall, education facilities, exercise and recreation facilities, offices, and much more!

Future Site of MIC

In July 2008, with the help of Allah and through generous community contributions, MIC acquired a beautiful 31-acre land at the heart of the fastest growing part of Shelby county, TN. In March 2012, we purchased another 24 acres that now complete a sprawling 55+ acre campus. Currently we’ve cleared the pad for the construction of the main building. During the summer of 2013 we finalized architectural plans and hope to break ground on the main building by the end of 2013.
